Warm Oil Flowing. Mind at Peace. Body Renewed.
3,000 years of Ayurvedic wisdom — one continuous stream of warm oil
The word Shirodhara is Sanskrit: Shiro meaning head, and Dhara meaning stream or flow. In this sacred Ayurvedic therapy, warm medicated oil is poured from a special copper vessel (Dhara patra) in a slow, rhythmic, uninterrupted stream directly onto the forehead — specifically targeting the Ajna chakra, the center of consciousness and intuition.
The sensation is immediate: within minutes the constant, gentle pressure of flowing oil induces a profound meditative state. Brain waves shift. The sympathetic nervous system quiets. Cortisol drops. Serotonin and dopamine rise. This is not relaxation as we know it — this is neurological restoration at the deepest level.
Described in the classical Ayurvedic texts Ashtanga Hridayam and Charaka Samhita, Shirodhara is prescribed for conditions that modern medicine calls anxiety disorders, insomnia, PTSD, and hypertension. At Scale Raipur SPA, we honour this tradition with authentic oils, trained therapists, and the precise technique passed down through Ayurvedic lineage.

Shirodhara is beneficial for a wide range of conditions and people
Every step is designed for maximum therapeutic benefit and your comfort
Your therapist assesses your Prakriti (dosha constitution) and current health concerns through a structured pulse and symptom assessment. This determines which medicated oil is most suitable for your specific condition — whether Brahmi for anxiety, Chandanadi for heat-related issues, or Ksheerabala for deep nervous system restoration.
You change into provided treatment attire and settle onto the Droni (Ayurvedic treatment table). The selected oil is gently warmed to precisely 37–40°C — body temperature — in the copper Dhara vessel. This temperature is critical: too hot risks burning, too cool reduces absorption and fails to trigger the neurological response.
A brief 10-minute head and neck massage opens the marma points (Ayurvedic energy nodes) on the scalp and prepares the Ajna chakra region for maximum oil absorption. This also relaxes the trapezius and neck muscles so the session is entirely comfortable and free of tension.
The copper vessel is suspended above your forehead at precisely the right height and angle. Warm oil begins to flow — a continuous, unbroken stream targeting the Sthapani marma (the forehead center). The stream oscillates gently from side to side in a rhythmic pattern, covering the entire forehead width. This phase lasts 30–45 minutes. Most people enter a deep meditative or sleep-like state within 10 minutes.
After the stream ends, you remain lying still for 10–15 minutes allowing the oil to continue penetrating the scalp, skull, and nervous system. A warm towel is placed over your forehead. This rest phase is when much of the deeper neurological recalibration occurs — do not rush this step.
You head to our wash room to gently cleanse the oil from hair (or keep it overnight if you prefer for maximum benefit). Our therapist shares personalized post-treatment recommendations including dietary suggestions for the day, which yoga postures complement the treatment, and when to return for optimal therapeutic outcomes.
